1000 Cranes for Peace

1000 Cranes for Peace

"Sadako Sasaki also became famous for her own attempt to fold 1,000 cranes in the 1950s. When Sadako was only two years old, she was exposed to radiation from the atomic bomb dropped on Hiroshima, in Japan. As she grew up, she developed leukemia. Suffering from the deadly disease, she learned the ancient tradition about the 1,000 paper cranes. Inspired to follow the legend, Sadako folded paper cranes in her hospital bed, praying for world peace. Sadako died when she was only 12, before she could finish 1,000 cranes. As a tribute to Sadako’s life and selfless wishes, her classmates folded the remaining cranes, and Sadako Sasaki was buried with the full 1,000 cranes. Her story stands as an inspiration to all, and a testament to the continued power of the paper crane as a compelling symbol for hope, love, honor, and peace."

Quote from Naomi Takeuchi's Website @ http://www.1000cranes.com/

I met Naomi at the Book Expo of America in New York City in June. Naomi has a goal to fold 1000 Cranes and practices that goal all the time, as she folds the Origami Cranes while she is talking with people, and then gives them out as business cards. She was inspired by this story of Sadako Sasaki as she developed the business plan for the Consulting firm, !000 Crances, where she holds the position of President.

This was a challenge I gave myself several years ago, when I moved across the country and started a new job. I folded cranes during tea breaks and lunch breaks... it initiated many conversations with my new co-workers-everyone checking on my weekly progress...and yes, I managed to fold 1000 cranes. It was a very satisfying goal and the cranes were given away to small children whenever the opportunity arose. Mind you, I still have a few hanging around!
